UKTCA Philosophy
As Transplant Coordinators (Donor and Recipient) we believe that
transplantation is an established and often the only treatment for
those with end-stage organ failure. We are committed to organ
donation and transplantation as a means of both extending and
improving quality of life.
We aim to provide high quality education to both health care
professionals and the general public in order to ensure that
accurate information is readily available to all, and that organ and
tissue donation maintains a positive profile.
We believe that the donation and subsequent transplantation of
organs and tissues can greatly benefit the recipient and may bring
comfort to the next of kin coping with the death of a loved one. As
such donation should be presented as a positive option to those in a
position to donate.
We will endeavour to provide those families and patients that we
work with, both donor and recipient, with honest and accurate
information. We believe that a full understanding of the patients’
condition and the process of donation / transplantation will enable
them to make informed choices and gain the most from this
phenomenon. We recognise the complex physical, psychological and
emotional implications of organ and tissue donation and
transplantation and value the importance of continuity of care and
support, both medical and emotional.
We respect the rights of potential donors, transplant recipients and
their families as individuals and will provide care, emotional
support and advocacy without bias.
We will perform our role with honesty and integrity and maintain a
cooperative and supportive relationship with all members of the
multi-disciplinary team.
We recognise that the field of organ and tissue donation and
transplantation embraces many complex and sensitive ethical issues
and is continually changing as the result of research. We are
therefore committed to our own development and further education,
both individually and as a profession.
