Pastoral
support
The role of the transplant coordinator is emotionally and physically
demanding. Many continue to work onerous on call and overtime hours.
The UKTCA acknowledges these demands and strives to produce a
supportive environment conducive to learning. The Modules have
therefore been designed as a residential study.
Course Philosophy and Aim
The United Kingdom Transplant Coordinators' Association and the
curriculum development team are committed to the professional
development of coordinators both as individuals and as a service and
see education as vital in this process. We believe that education is
an ongoing process and these modules are designed to give students a
platform from which they can continue the learning process
throughout their careers.
This practice of continuing education and lifelong learning links
into the NHS human resources agenda and the First Class Service
report, which states:
“Professionals and other bodies have a key role to play in
supporting effective continuing professional development…. and
clinical governance needs to be underpinned by a culture that values
lifelong learning and recognises the key part it plays in improving
practice”
While much of the course content is theoretical it is understood
that exploration of personal feelings and ethical principles play an
important part in learning to offer support to others of the highest
standard.
Autonomy and self-motivation are seen as valuable assets and the
students will be encouraged to take responsibility for their own
educational process and we recognise the need for a flexible
approach to maintain this.
