The Human Tissue Authority

The Human Tissue Authority exists to monitor and regulate the application of the Human Tissue Act 2004. The Authority also has functions relating to licensing of establishments and regulation of living donation in Scotland. The Human Tissue Authority has two principal statutory functions:

  1. Issuing Codes of Conduct related to the regulation and enactment of the Human Tissue Act 2004.

  2. Licence and inspect the establishments carrying out procedures cited in the Human Tissue Act.

Licensing of procedures indicated within the Human Tissue Act can be a complex and often confusing aspect of the new legislation; especially where the Transplant Coordinator is faced with the introduction of new research programs. Fortunately the Human Tissue Authority’s website has a Frequently Asked Questions area where clear guidance can be secured.

Electronic Newsletters are available on the HTA website, to access this area of the HTA site, please click here.
