NHS Blood and Transplant

NHS Blood and Transplant replaced the National Blood Authority and UK Transplant in October 2005. It promotes the donation of blood and organs, co-ordinates a 24-hour organ matching and allocation service, and arranges the collection, preparation and distribution of blood and blood products. Although NHSBT is a Special Health Authority in England and Wales, the organisation has a UK wide remit.

NHSBT has 3 divisions:
  • National Blood Service
  • UK Transplant
  • Bio Products Laboratory

Through these divisions NHSBT carries forward responsibilities such as:

  • encouraging people to donate organs, blood and tissues
  • optimising the safety and supply of blood, organs and tissues
  • helping to raise the quality, effectiveness and clinical outcomes of blood and transplant services

The NHSBT web site can be accessed HERE. You can also find the site through our ‘Links’pages.
